Kinect for Xbox 360 vs. Playstation Move

Kinect for Xbox 360 vs. Playstation Move
If anyone is expecting Sony or Microsoft to out-innovate Nintendo in the motion-control arena, then he is bound to be disappointed. Microsoft/Sony simply want to get a piece of the lucrative pie that Nintendo has baked, to be able to have a presence that keeps their audience from leaving their primary consoles for the Wii whenever company comes over.

This is much less about doing something new than doing the same thing that your competitor has done to great effect. Unfortunately, since the advent of MotionPlus, the Wii's motion control is pretty good, but if Sony or Nintendo can cut deeply into the Wii Sports / Sports Resort / Fit crowd, it will be well worth their investment in the technology.

Well i just finished watching the e3 for sony and its 4am. From what i see i am glad i own a ps3. The are finally coming around the bend and making up for past issues. I personally think that MOVE idea is great. I wanted a wii for the part that you move and it would be fun. With the terrible graphics i just don't want to see it on my entertainment center.

It looks like the games are starting to get good. Every single game that they showed im gonna but. Twisted Metal and GT5 are the first on my list. I'm getting the MOVE and tiger woods golfing on day 1 too.

I am sick of people complaining about the switch to 3d. It's gonna happen so let it be. I am a little sad because only 3 months ago i bought a new 47" LED television, but i already got that for sale and making room for my 3d tv.
All you people saying all you need is a computer, I am kinda one of you. I have a computer and a ps3 so i get the best of both worlds. But you find me a cheaper computer right now that can do 3d games and also be able to play the game at at least the graphics the ps3 does

Kinect Adventures

Kinect Adventures is the game that every Kinect owner will soon be playing. That's because it's the one that comes with the hardware. So it should give players a taste of what they can expect from Xbox 360 motion gaming.
As with a bulk of this first round of Kinect games, Kinect Adventures looks an awful lot like a high definition version of a typical Wii game. It uses Xbox 360 avatars as the game's characters and the player's representation and the rest of the game's colorful graphics match that aesthetic. While it's essentially a collection of mini-games,

Ideal Player

Kinect Adventures' five games are easy to play and fun to devote a half hour to. This likely isn't for people looking for a long, deep, plot-driven experience.

Why You Should Care

If you pony up the cash to buy the Kinect camera and don't have any money left over for games, you'll be spending quite a bit of time with the included Kinect Adventures. This is the first game almost anyone who buys a Kinect will experience. More than any other launch title, Kinect Adventures is also the poster child for the Kinect, getting face time everywhere from the stage of E3 to an appearance on Jimmy Fallon and Oprah.

What sort of games are included in Kinect Adventures The game comes with five sorts of activities, each with a collection of settings and levels. Kinect Adventures presents these games to players as a series of adventures. You'll need to play through all of the adventures and challenges in a difficulty setting to unlock new challenges and the next difficulty. The game includes four difficulty settings. The overall goal of the game is to become an "expert adventurer."
When they showed the kick ball game at E3 it looked a bit out of control, how does it play? That's Rally Bal, you play the game by swatting and kicking balls at a wall of sometimes moving targets. As you play, the number of balls can increase, turning the game into the most frenetic of the bunch. Good Science Studio's take on breakout is engaging, but not something I'd want to play for more than a few rounds at a time.
The rafting game is showing up a lot on television. Is it any fun? That's River Rush. It is my favorite of the bunch. The object of the game is to guide a raft down a river course, collecting as many icons as you can in the shortest time possible. You control the raft not by leaning, but by moving around inside it and jumping. Played alone it's a neat experience, but played with a friend it becomes a challenge of communicating and staying in sync
What is the most interesting game in Kinect Adventures? 20,000 Leaks, which has you controlling your avatar while he or she is submerged in a glass box. You have to use your hands, feet, legs, arms and head to plug leaks caused by the aquatic wildlife drifting by outside your box. Initially, the game is pretty easy, just making you plug a leak or two at a time with your hands. But as the game progresses you need to start plugging multiple leaks simultaneously, forcing you to essentially play Twister in the air. Once you start dealing with a web of shattered glass and four or five leaks at a time, the game becomes much more fun.
What's the worst game of the bunch? Space Pop is a snooze fest. In it you have to pop bubbles that float between holes on the walls, floor and ceiling. The twist is that you're doing this in low gravity, so you can flap your arms to float to the top of the room. You'll also need to move forward and backwards in your room while playing to line up with the floating bubbles. It's a bit too slow and not challenging enough to make it worth the time to play.
How is Reflex Ridge? Think of it as the Kinect's Mine Cart level. But instead of tapping buttons to speed up and wiggling a thumbstick to dodge things, you have to use your body to make it through the obstacle course on wheels. Your avatar is standing on a moving platform. You have to move back and forth, duck and jump to avoid obstacles that the platform is moving through and to collect icons. When you play with a friend, the game split-screens and it becomes a race. The obstacle course nature of the game is a great fit for Kinect.
How does the game handle playing with other people? Kinect and the game both do a surprisingly good job of tracking multiple players in a room, making games like River Rush and Reflex Ridge, in particular, a blast to play. Online the game does just as well. My favorite of the bunch online or off, alone or with a group is definitely River Rush

Kinect Audio Not Working Correctly

Several of my friends are GameStop store managers, and Microsoft and GameStop have given all Store Managers a free Kinect, at least in the USA.
One major issue they have been having problems with is volume control. Apparently the Kinect takes a few moments to evaluate the level of volume in your voice and then adjusts.
One of my friends is soft spoken. When he starts to speak he speaks very softly so it is difficult to hear him with his first few words, and then BAM,Kinect automatically takes him from a soft volume, to a volume that makes him sound like he is talking way too loud.
Several of his friends in MP games have asked him to turn it down, so he tried by talking medium to loud to get the Kinect to adjust down, but it doesn't work.
He has re-worked it in the Set-Up but keeps getting the same problem. Several others I know have the same issues.

I am curious, those of you who have Kinect, when you play or talk online, does any of your friends complain about the Volume jumping up, or you being too loud? Even when you adjust it or redo the Set-Up, does it still happen?
Frosty
The 6 GameStop Store Managers who have it, have told me to wait and not even consider buying it till they get the Kinks all worked out with the actual hardware. They said that Microsoft will more then likely release a 2.0 Kinect in the future.
All 6 Have checked out all the games for Kinect, and they all said, that none of them are worthy of a purchase at this time. All the movement in them are very forgiving. The Fitness games they say are very inaccurate at this time. The only one they like is "Dance Central", more so for the fun it creates with a group. They say it is more fun, to watch people, but those dancing get good excercize, but that the game is highly inaccurate.
So with lackluster software and buggy hardware, I wouldn't buy one right now. If you have the extra cash to buy Kinect 1.0 and then can afford to buy Kinect 2.0 when it comes out, and your SUPER bored with everything right now...well I still couldn't recommend it. All my friends who have the Kinect, get that new Kinect High, and then 2 weeks later their back to their regular console gaming and the Kinect is collecting dust. Several are back to using Headsets and not even using the Kinect for in-voice MP gaming.
All roads point to a "wait and see" for me anyway. I am anxious to see what they "can" do with it. So if you buy one now, it would be more like buying and seeing what will happen with it. So I don't
Second thumbs up here for YourShape: Fitness Evolved.
I spent quite a while debating whether to go with EA Sports Active 2 as it has a more customisable workout regime, but am glad I went with YourShape now.
Motion detection is full body 1:1 tracking, lag-fee and amazingly robust and accurate. Compared to most of the other Kinect titles the body tracking is in another league. I especially like that your on-screen representation is a real-time you, not an avatar.
The thing that really works well for me is the cardio boxing section. It's a punishing workout at higher levels. Most important for me is that as well as the punches it includes lots of footwork, stance work and kicks, as these really help a lot with my Kungfu training.
If you are getting Kinect you should definitely investigate Kinect Sports. It's an absolute blast to play and very very slick and polished. It's gone down a storm with my regular Friday night gaming crew
There's a lot of fud out there about Kinect. People seem to have an irrational fear of the device for no good reason. Fact of the matter is the hardware works very well.
Some of the software for it does not work very well though, because the devs have done a sloppy job on interpreting motion. Same as Wii, same as Move. There is no hardware revision necessary, but software for it will improve over time as motion interpretation improves and updated SDK's are released.

How To Troll The Xbox 360 Kinect Users You Know And Love

There are some pretty cool things about Microsoft's no-controller Xbox Kinect sensor array. The thing lets you control your TV with a hand-wave and a voice command. But! People near your TV can — and will — mess with you.
The problem involves the voice control offered by the Kinect. With a Kinect attached to your Xbox 360, you can say "Xbox... ESPN!" and it will load its new ESPN channel, then use a few more voice commands to start watching a football game. Someone else can walk in the room and say "Xbox... pause" and your game will be stopped. Or they could say "Xbox... stop" and the whole application might shut down. No more ESPN.
The current Xbox Kinect voice command program used by Microsoft does not distinguish between my voice and yours. It simply listens for anyone speaking some of the pre-set commands (and does a great job of distinguishing them and reacting to them on the first mumbled try, I should add.) So I'll be watching a movie or a sports show, loving my ability to pause the thing with a voice command or to bark out a request for an instant replay — and then you'll walk over and mess things up. The Kinect doesn't care if I'm the one saying "Xbox" or you. It will listen to anyone.
Little brothers will be interfering with the Xbox video-viewing of older sisters everywhere once Kinect is out.
Wives will be able to snap husbands from TV stupors by voice-commanding Kinect to stop.
There will be no hogging of the remote. There will be a chattering fusillade of warring voice commands as anyone in the family who can speak will be telling the Xbox what to do.
If we're lucky, Microsoft's engineers will fix this and have the Kinect learn just the voice of the person who turned the system on. That wasn't the case when I tried the voice-activated video playback here at E3 earlier this week. Microsoft developers joked that this issue might help people learn to share better, but they didn't have a tech solution, unfortunately.
Will good manners stop the trolls? Or will it be impossible to resist the opportunity to walk in on a video-watching Kinect user and shout "Xbox.... pause!" just to mess with them. Who could resist that?

Avatar Kinect, Hulu Plus & Netflix Kinect Functionality Unveiled at CES 2011

Avatar Kinect, Hulu Plus & Netflix Kinect Functionality Unveiled at CES 2011

keynote, where CEO Steve Ballmer (and others) takes the stage and talks about what’s to come from the Redmond-based company is the kick-off for the Consumer Electronics Show. This year, Microsoft took some time to talk about their recently released motion-controlled peripheral, Kinect, and the features that will be added into the accessory soon. For those who believe that Kinect’s usage through the Xbox 360′s system isn’t as in-depth as they’d like, Microsoft is happy to add functionality to two main features, along with adding an entirely new way to interact with your friends on Xbox LIVE
First and foremost, Avatar Kinect is how Microsoft believes that many gamers will want to interact with their friends. Thanks to Kinect, users will be able to actually “interact” with their friends, right in the digital world played out on their TV. It’s not as vast as, say, Sony’s PlayStation Home digital world, but the Kinect camera does add a bit of personalization to the usage that some may enjoy. The Kinect sensor is now able to track not only a person’s movements of appendages and head, but also the mouth and eyebrows, all of which will be repeated by the Avatar in the game. Avatar Kinect will feature different backgrounds, where users can basically sign into a real-time chat, with their Avatar mimicking their movements in real-life.
The other main part of the announcement from Microsoft, as far as it relates to Kinect, is the addition of Kinect-based controls for not only Hulu Plus, but also
Users will be able to make use of this method of navigation as soon as Microsoft pushes out a dashboard update, which should be any minute. Both of the newer support services will allow for users to select movies, shows, or the like without having to use a controller. Additionally, players will also be able to use voice commands to control some functions. The updates are said to be rolled out in the Spring of 2011.

Why My Kinect is Not Collecting Dust

Why My Kinect is Not Collecting Dust

Before I go much further, you need to know that for all intents and purposes I am a hard core gamer. I have grown up spending not an insignificant amount of time being entertained by video games. My father, being a long time analyst in the industry, worked on an early project with Nintendo and their first console. He brought one home during the project and I was hooked.
I’ve owned every major fixed and mobile gaming console since, and I can say video games are my guilty pleasure. That being said, after getting married my video game addiction became harder to maintain. To quote Brodie from Mallrats “Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn for SEGA.” How true this quote is, as video games – or more specifically me playing video games – instantly changes her generally cheery disposition.
In order to get my fill I had to start playing after my wife and kids went to bed; I would sneak out into the living room and get my fix. This is why when the Wii first came out I saw a way that me, my wife and even my kids could all play video games together. I was quoted when the Nintendo’s motion gaming console first launched as saying that “the Wii was the board game of a new generation” and I still feel I am right. However, even though the Wii was inviting for people of all ages, it still required the primary barrier to entry to gaming, the remote.
Granted it is a simplified and more intuitive remote but it is a remote none-the-less. My then five and three year olds still had trouble using it. I noticed as well that there was still a slight learning curve for those who have never used a remote to play video games. This is where the Kinect came in.
Since having the Kinect in my home I have found that as a family we use it a great deal more, even more than our Wii. My now seven and five year olds have taken to it and are able to compete and play without barriers or frustration. When they have friends over it is one of the first things they want to show off and play. Friends of theirs who have never played video games pick it right up and it’s instantly a party hit. I’m not sure our experience would be the same if all we had was the Wii.
I personally doubt the Wii or the Kinect will ever appeal or replace the experience of a hard core gamer. I do however believe that both platforms are fulfilling the job they were created to fulfill. Namely, making it easy for non-gamers to start gaming by eliminating the complexity of a controller filled with buttons.
For me, what the Wii failed at for us as a family the Kinect succeeded at. I now have a way to engage in interactive entertainment with all the members of my household. So unlike Don I’m not looking forward to developers trying to figure out how to appeal to me as a hard core gamer. I am looking forward to developers creating new and innovative ways for me and my family to jump, swing, dance, kick and more all while playing video games together as a family.

kinect

Microsoft head Steve Ballmer hinted that Kinect will be getting PC support in the future.

In an interview with BBC News during the Consumer Electronics Show this week, Ballmer stated that while he has no announcements to make, the company will give PC users the ability to plug in their Kinect cameras.

"We'll support [PC] in a formal way in the right time," Ballmer said about Kinect. "When we've got an announcement to make, we'll make it."

Ballmer also reiterated Microsoft's long-term plan for Kinect, which involves going beyond just catering towards traditional gamers.

"We certainly started out with Xbox very focused in on gaming," he added. "We're trying to do two major things, though. We're trying to move beyond gaming to include the world of socialization, movies, TV, and of music. And we're trying to make the whole experience accessible to everybody in the family, not just the traditional gamer."

Primesense, the company that created the technology used in Kinect, recently announced it teamed up with computer manufacturer ASUS to develop and release the WAVI Xtion, a PC-based 3D motion camera this year.

Alistair de B Clarkson has got a Kinect controller and a Wiimote to talk over IP to a server that handles midi over IP (and forwards it to Ableton Live), with this solution multiple people can collaborate over wireless without any significant latency. The demo only has one of the instruments connected, the green bar at the side. The little horizontal lines across the bar are the lower stave (bass clef) and can active Midi Notes. The other box does nothing, instead a wiimote is used to tune synth parameters
Joshua Blake, OpenKinect Community Founder has come up with his own version of windows 7 multitouch using Depth-Camera on Kinect for hand tracking. The proof of concept video shows Bing Maps being controlled using Kinect. This will work on any multitouch application already written to be used on a touchscreen. The code that enables this is part of internal InfoStrat MotionFx project which Joshua Blake works on and he says they will eventually be open sourced, but needs a bit more work to be practical..

Kinect you and the game.

Microsoft released Xbox 360 Kinect, Kinect you and the game.
Kinect performs it best when you plays games that need whole body movement. It’s much better and more natural to synchronize your real movement and the movement in screen.
It’s really hard to compare Xbox Kinect with Sony Move. It’s like one is apple, the other is orange.
Kinect surprised me on the video recording function. When I raced in ‘Kinect Sports’ track-and-field meet hurdle, my kitty joined me, it’s really funny when we watched the record video.
Nevertheless, for some games you feel better if you have controller right in your hand. Playing racing games and FPS games with Xbox Kinect would not be as good as other games.
For now, Kinect understands English, Mexican and Japanese, more languages will be added in. Microsoft official Kipman said that voice recognition system would be improved continuously in order to recognize dialects.
The reason Microsoft released Kinect is not only hope to reform the way we play video games, but also to change the way we interact with all the entrainment equipment.
250GB Xbox 360 plus Kinect costs $ 399, 4GB Kit $ 299, Kinect itself for $ 149, without games. Worth the price? This may depend on whether you have children, and what kind of player you are. Choose your best suit of Microsoft Xbox Kinect.

Reconstruction With Kinect

Nicolas Burrus has created uploaded this video where he is experimenting with 3D reconstruction of the scene with freehand Kinect device. When he moves around the Kinect, more and more of the surroundings is captured and reconstructed in 3D. So this means that if we sufficiently move around Kinect in a room, we can get a full 3D reconstruction of the room with all its objects; doing this kind of thing till now would have cost thousands of dollars but now with Kinect its very simple and yet very effective

Kinect for Xbox 360 review

 Kinect for Xbox 360 review

Microsoft isn't straying from the packaging aesthetic it uses for Xbox 360, with arguably the biggest differentiator being a slit in the cardboard for Kinect Adventures to go (the retail package is covered by another thin layer of cardboard and ads that keep the game in place). Opening the top flap reveals a very purple interior, Kinect's color choice (as further demonstrated by the DVD cases for all motion titles). Behind the sensor itself, there are a handful of pamphlets, a USB extension cable, and an AC adapter for using Kinect with older Xbox 360 models (more on that later).

What is Kinect?

Kinect is an Xbox 360 add on that puts you right in the game. You play games and control your Xbox 360 just by moving or talking. No controller required. Just you.
But Kinect is not just for your games. Kinect enhances your entire entertainment experience. Watch a movie without a remote, find content on your tv or play your favorite music just by asking. And Kinect is so simple everyone can do it.
Kinect is like a super webcam. It sits beneath your TV screen facing you. And when your Xbox 360 is on, it is literally watching and listening to you.
To get Kinect’s attention all you have to do is wave. Kinect’s gesture recognition realizes you are waving and Kinect’s facial recognition goes to work figuring out who you are. It matches you to your profile and signs you into your Xbox 360 profile. Once signed in, you navigate around the Xbox 360 dashboard using your hand like a mouse on the screen.
Using your hands is very natural but using your voice is even easier. With Kinect, if you can see it … just say it. Simply tell your Xbox what you want with commands like “Xbox play Halo” or “Xbox play music”. No more fumbling around for the converter in the dark just say “Xbox pause” With Kinect’s “natural user interface” there are no barriers and no learning curve.
Without a controller, you play Kinect games with your entire body. Kinect’s sensor tracks your skeleton and recognizes 20 different joints per player! Tracking you that closely allows game developers to pick up your most subtle moves and feed them back into the game.
As a player, you focus on your movement rather than which button on a controller to press. Its about where is your right foot right now, what is your left hand doing and where is are you looking This simultaneously makes games easy to learn and more emersive to play.
Kinect is a revolutionary new platform with immense potential. Kinect’s launch is a jumping off point for Microsoft. With Microsoft planning to take the technology n many different directions. It will take game developers some time to figure out how to fully exploit its capabilities. But they will no doubt utilize it in ways even Microsoft didn’t anticipate

kinect for xbox360

Kinect for Xbox 360, or simply Kinect (originally known by the code name Project Natal),is a "controller-free gaming and entertainment experience" by Microsoftfor the Xbox 360video game platform, and may later be supported by PCs via Windows 8 Based around a webcam-style add-on peripheralfor the Xbox 360 console, it enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures and spoken commands The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typical gamer base. Kinect competes with the Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus and PlayStation Move & PlayStation Eye motion control systems for the Wii and PlayStation 3 home consoles, respectively.
Kinect was launched in North America on November 4, 2010, in Europe on November 10, 2010, in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore on November 18, 2010 and in Japan on November 20, 2010.Purchase options for the sensor peripheral include a bundle with the game Kinect Adventures and console bundles with either a 4 GBor 250 GBXbox 360 console and Kinect Adventures.
In December 2010, it emerged that Microsoftwas bringing Kinect technology to Windows PCs, when Korean game developer GamePrix announced that its PC MMORPG Divine Souls would be one of the first games to use the console hardware as a controller
